German term or phrase: Rückstellmuster
This appears as a header in a product release record, followed by "Anzahl Rückstellmuster". Not really any other context.

I can't find this word anywhere. What would it be? Reserve sample? Provisional sample? Anybody know? Thanks in advance for your help.

Thanks to all who contributed. "Reference sample" didn't quite sound the right note. John's option was interesting, and would possibly work in some contexts, though I can't help feeling that they would use something like "Ersatzmuster" if they wanted to say "replacement sample". The Ernst is not always the most reliable source. So that left Fred's option, supported by two dictionaries and agreed with by two others. It does seem the most likely translation here. So congratulations Fred and thanks again to the others who helped.

reference sample

Explanation:
depending on the context in which the term is used.

The above term was used in reference to lubricants, and was found at

www.noria.com/Learn/ler30.html

which unfortunately has since been removed. The original page contained the following explanation (excerpt):

"The PREDICT Navigator is a portable screening device for qualifying the condition of lubricants in non-combustion applications. This hand-held oil condition monitor can be used at the equipment site as a stand-alone unit or as a complete system backed by a laboratory. The typical test requires about 10 - 15 ml of lubricant and four minutes to complete. No sample preparation is required. As a comparative device, Navigator identifies shifts in oil characteristics relative to a REFERENCE SAMPLE. By cost-effectively screening samples that have shifted in quality, Navigator enables the user to focus resources on correcting problems instead of finding them."

Hope that's of some use to you.

replacement sample

Explanation:
Although 'retained sample' sounds really good, Ernst gives 'replacement' in connection with quality testing. Google hits for 'replacement sample' are about the same as for 'retained sample'. Seems like there is a difference in context.
I just thought this is worth mentioning.
